religion, and we are not showing that footage, because it is appearing to be obtained in a hostage situation. and released by the leader, he said that he would release the girls in exchange for the boko haram prisoners held by the nigerian government. we will bring in our executive director of the american-nigerian leadership council, and first of all, sir, your reaction to the video, and the leader of the boko haram saying that he would trade them for the prisoners held by the nigerian government. >> thank you, craig. it is good to be here. well, first, that video is obviously a product of a cohesive indoctrination of the girl girls on a short term basis. the girls are forced to make that confession, and that is part of boko haram's m.o. in reaction to the situations of this type. and the whole world needs to
8:01 am
know that is a coerced confession that they had to make at gunpoint maybe. >> and if at least 100 of the girls are being kept together which is what we saw in that video, how real is the possibility that many of them have already been sold across ni jeer ya's borders into the neighboring cameroon or neighboring chad? >> well, there is a report possibility that a small number has been trafficked across the border, but we don't believe and somebody reports that we are getting directly on the ground from the people in nigeria is that a majority of the girls if not all of them are still within nigeria, because when they are going across the border, attention starting to focus on them from othernations within the border. and so right now it is a safe haven for them within nigeria, and so we believe that most of
8:02 am
the girls are there, and maybe not all of them, maybe have fit into the picture, but we believe they are there. >> and you are believing they are all still alive and there with the kidnappers? >> for the most part except for perhaps any number of them that could be sick right now or have been injured, and you know, due to the harsh environment where the girls are being kept right now, and maybe a few of them on the fridges who are not well enough to appear in the video. >> and here, samuel, we know the rule here. you don't ne gosch quite with the terrorists, but -- negotiate with the terrorist, but would the government of goodluck jonathan who has been widely criticized not to find the girls, this is an exception, that they will negotiate with the boko haram to get back these girls? h. >> well, the circumstances are certainly calling for unusual
8:03 am
means to resolve this, and maybe it is not with the government of good luk j goodluck jonathan and maybe with some intermediaries who have some access or the informal access to proceed with some e negotiation, because the girls' lives are at stake as it is right now. >> sam standby, because i want to bring in stephanie gosk who is across the border in nigeria in the capital of neighboring cameroon, and in burundi, i believe, but stephanie, what more can you tell us about the video we have been seeing? >> well, there are a few more important things, craig, that we should look at. first of all, we don't know when it is shot, and we have to keep that in mind, because we stee girls together. and the other thing, too, by our count in the video, you only see 100 of the schoolgirls and there were 276 abducted so more than half of them don't appear here, and another interesting thing is that the leader of boko haram does not appear with the schoolgirls himself.
8:04 am
he is clearly somewhere else, and he is making the demands from a different location. and two very interesting parts of the video. and the other thing, when you look at it, you will see that they are trying to make the point that the girls have been converted to islam and done so willingly, but the part we are not showing you because it was made under duress in a hostage situation are the girls face on face as close to the camera as i am right now talking about the conversion, and condemning christianity, and a look of fear on the faces in that moment. as well. so striking video, and a classic hostage video, really, but al of the more chilling, because you are talking about teenaged schoolgirls. craig. >> stephanie gosk, thank you, and samuel, thank you to you as well. now we turn to the crisis in ukraine. the acting president condemned the votes in eastern ukraine calling them quote, a farce." the united states and other western countries have called
8:05 am
them illegal. and meanwhile, russia said that it will be honoring the referendums. and one region claims that about 90% of the voters approved breaking away from ukraine while the other claims that some 96% voted for the awe tutonomy, and however, reports of widespread irregularities and including people voting multiple times, and also violence in at least one town near donetsk with people firing on a town hall, and reports say that at least one man was killed in that, and joining me in the ooh stud -- in our studio is eamon. >> well, it just matters what the government is going to do, because they will be a landlocked country and only one
8:06 am
country to turn to and that is russia. it depends how quickly russia moves to solidify the government. and so in kiev, they have security forces and troops on the ground, but how quickly and stro strongly do they move to try to prevent any type of this fracturing happening on the ground. >> yesterday's vote in stark n contrast to that recent pugh research poll showing 70% of the people in eastern ukraine wanted the people to stay united, pew poll. did they just stay away from the vote? >> well, two things to keep in mind here, there is a tremendous amount of fear that is sweeping across the eastern part of the country, and if you are not a pro russian separatist, then perhaps you don't have a voice at this particular stage, so there is clearly no indication that people opposing the referendum would go to the polls. secondly, we don't have any
8:07 am
evidence to suggest that the numbers from the polls in yesterday's vote are in fact are in fact accurate and more importantly are substantiated by the voter lists and have more accurate sense of the population's desire, and that is why perhaps the pew number suggesting that 70% of the population want to remain part of ukraine is because it was privately and the people can speak up and not under intimidation, and a lot of e people have suggested that is now taking place in the eastern part of the country. >> all eyes on the 25th vote of the ukrainian vote for president, and how critical? >> well, how do you expect the large part of the eastern part of the country to go to the polls to vote for the new president when there is upheaval and turmoil. no indication that the candidates themselves are able to go to eastern part of the

if you are walking around with a smartphone in your pocket, then you are walking bait for thiefs who zoned in on the smartphones like never before. and iphone thefts are so common that police have dubbed it apple picking. it is a crime that often turns violent and that is the case for megan bowkin who was talking with her mom when two teenagers shot and killed her for that iphone in 2012. her father is now lobbying for a fix that he says could have saved megan's life. mandatory kill switches on all cell phone rendering them inactive when they are stolen and useless to thieves. top the cops in new york and l.a. have called for the stam, but the cell phone companies have resisted. and now we are joined by the correspondent for the daily beast who detailed the problem in a article. this is fascinating and people do not realize that the

technology is out there until they read the piece. apple and other phone makers did start to make the kill switches available to the consumers last year, but as i understand it, you have to opt-in, correct? >> yes, the concern of the people like mr. bokin is that if you don't have a situation when it is built in when you buy it that people are not going to bother to go, you know, figure out how to download it and activate it and all that, and then the thieves are going to figure, well, 1 of 10 people do it, it is worth stealing. so the object is to make it so that if the thief takes the cell phone, it is about as worth as much as a paperweight. >> last year, there was some 30% of all robberies were cell phone. and the industry makes $30 billion a year alone just replacing the stolen and the lost phones. is it corporate greed here? is that part of what is holding back the cell phone makers? >> well, the nypd commissioner bill brattin said that those are
8:23 am
the words that he used corporate greed. it is interest ing thing that i california there was a measure that was defeated, and then late last week all of the sudden apple started to change the tune, because they are start in to realize that it is untenable position for them to be in if you have a kid killed over a cell phone, and there is technology to prevent it. >> and you mentioned california, and the lobbyists won a measure last week that is a bill to require these kill switches on these phones in that state. and apple and microsoft dropped opposition to the bill in california and are we seeing the tipping point now? >> i e hope so. you would hope so, and if you go back to 2005, a kid was killed in brooklyn over an ipod, and the family got a call from steve jobs asking what to do? and maybe the thing that apple could have done in a long time ago and will do now is to make these cell phones useless when
8:24 am

says that you thought that he should have been drafted earlier, and where should he have gone? >> well, i wonder if he was picked with a seventh pick with a throwaway pick for the nfl to save face. and the reason you expected him to go earlier is because he was the co-defensive player of the year in college football's best conference, the s.e.c., and it makes you wonder. you saw players that got drafted from smaller schools and players who were less accomplished obviously than michael sam, and it makes you wonder whether or not his sexual preference had something to do with that. >> and let me play the devil's ed a v advocates, because was the critics have said that the combine performance is not that gre great, and he is small for the
8:26 am
db, and, you know, what do you can say to that? how do you respond to that? >> well, those are valid points, because when you start to talk about projecting how a player is going to excel on the next level, yeah, you have to be going beyond just what happened on the field. i think that is still the bottom line in a lot of case, and what do you see on film from this player? we have seen the players before who are undersized who do not have the 40-yard dash time that is pro to typical. so, it is not a definitive process when you get down to the bottom of it, and so if you have a player like michael sam that you rank at a certain level, and another team who doesn't have the identification, and not talk tact first round pick, but the middle to late round pick, then maybe that is the thing that the social attention that will make
8:27 am
you stay away from that player. now, no team has come out to say that, but you can suspect that when you know that the gravity of the whole situation to say, well sh well, this might be a reason that so many people passed on him. remember, one thing, craig, that i want to point out quickly, is that before the revelation for being openly gay was announced to the world, you know, michael sam was considered maybe a third or the fourth-round pick. >> yes. >> and with n hours of him being drafted, that sample jersey was available on nflshop.com, and before the draft, and then it was reported that the same jersey was wildly popular. and so how big is michael sam for the nfl and the team?
8:28 am
>> well, we don't know if he is going to make the team, be for real, going to the seventh round to a team with one of the best defenses, and perhaps the best defensive line, so it is going to be tough for him to make this team, but obviously, when you look at the social statement that michael sam has made, he is going to be a model for some people based on that. and i think that is where the marketability comes. >> and you raise an interesting point, what if he does not make the squad? what happens to the story? >> well, i think that it can can continue depending upon what he wants to do with his career. you know, that is going way, way ahead of the curve right now, but it is a relevant question, because like i said, the odds of him making this team are long. but there are other ways to continue your football career if you don't make the final roster in august. you can can go on the practice squad, sign with another team, get picked up by another team, and he can go to canada, and so
8:29 am
there are all sorts of avenues that he can pursue, but, you know, that is going to be determined a at later date, but the key right now is for him to get on the football field, and then for him to make it a tough decision for jeff fisher and the rams to cut him if that is going to happen or to make the team. >> jared, really quickly, and i want to switch gears before i let you go, and talk about the clippers' controversy with donald sterling speaking out for the first time in an interview with anderson cooper, and this is what he had to say. >> i'm a good member who made a mistake, and i'm apologizing and i'm asking for forgiven. am i entitled to one mistake after 35 years? i mean, i love my league, i love the partners and am i entitled to one mistake? it is a terrible mistake and i will never do it again. >> what do you make of those comment, and any impact on the owner's decision to vote him out? >> i don't think it is going to be having any impact on the

that, and saying that is playing great primary politics, because you are on the side of many republicans and on the wrong one which says that 66% of the democrats disagree with the manmade component, but when it comes to the general erection, the republicans may be in sticky waters as there are many, many scientists who will say that we have contributed to the climate change. and it is like the gay marriage debate, because there are republic republicans who are against it and republican base is firmly in align will there, but it becomes a bigger problem when you look at the general election folk, and looking at where the independent voters are. >> and mark murky ri oray who if the few people on television who can cite poll numbers just like that. >> thank you, craig. and now, in utah, allowing

simply that the homeowner no longer has to have the burden of proof, but the intruder. and in this particular case, this guy was bragging around town that people were breaking into his garage and that he was going to shoot them. so he entrapped the people, and baited them to come n and so the high school kids were in his garage, and he went out there with the shotgun and fired four rounds into the garage with the shotgun and killed this exchange student. this guy is not protected by the montana law. he entrapped, baited and then he just executed. this guy is not going to be protected by the montana law. >> in the statement, his attorney denies that luring accusation, and he says in part that the family garage door was open for ventilation, because marcus and janelle smoked cigarettes in the garage, and the purse alleged to be bait was located in the dark corner of the unlit garage, and not visible from the driveway and
8:44 am
how would those accusations affect the castle doctrine defense? >> well, it is not going to wash. again, in the castle doctrine, it is not the castle doctrine, because we modified ate great deal in montana and we effectively changed the law in montana so that when somebody breaks into your house, they no longer have to be raucous and violent and we took out that language, and we said that the burden of proof is on the intruder and not the homeowner, but in this particular case, why didn't he call the police two or three times before when somebody was in the garage, and by the way, if you don't want people to get into the garage, close the door. that is smarter thing than firing into the dark. in montana, you don't fire into the dark on a mountain top when you are in a hunting camp and let alone in your own garage. it is a dumbass move in montana. >> and real quick, the democrat ellie hill says she owns a

handgun and moving to repeal those provisions which is a shoot first and ask questions later mentality. this is what she said. >> there is nothing wrong with a homeowner defending with lethal force if that is what was done in that situation. and that is what they can do, but that is not what this law is, because the castle doctrine is to have some kid wandering into a garage or a trick or treater who comes too late. >> and so what is the happy medium here governor shiite chw. >> and what happened is that the police said that you were concerned about bodily harm and shot that person, but in this case, the police arrested this fellow and he is being charged with homicide. i think that the law is working in montana, and the point is
8:46 am
that you have to be concerned about bodily harm and they have to be in your home, and this guy baited him, and he didn't even see the person. he shot a shotgun four times in the dark, just in cold blood. i don't think that he is going to be able to use montana's law as a defense. >> all right. former montana governor brian shwitser, and we will continue the follow the story, governor. thank you. and the con stroer si of the rth therutger's quarterback involving the victim who was a linebacker who played with nelson and while patrolling mankato, minnesota, and nelson was arrested at the scene. he faces third degree assault charge, and nelson transferred to rutgers from minnesota in january. >> and interim director taking over the embattled phoenix health care system for an
